If you want to stay healthy, fit, and smart, doctors and nutritionists have long suggested making fish a regular part of your daily diet. It might not be for everyone, but the health benefits it provides are irrefutable.
Sadly, not all fish are created equal when it comes to your health. While fish like wild salmon from Alaska and Arctic can provide a wealth of nutrients, other fish just don’t measure up.
You might be surprised to learn that tilapia, a popular fish in restaurants and at home, could be doing you more harm than good. Here’s what you need to know before you start your next tilapia feast…
While eating fish like tilapia is supposed to be good for you, the truth is actually much more complicated. For example, did you know that tilapia contains the lowest levels of the omega-3 fatty acids of any fish? This makes it less nutritious than all other fish.
Tilapia could also be pretty bad for your brain, too. One of the omega-6 fatty acids is called of arachidonic acid. This is a compound which significantly increases the type of inflammatory damage that precedes Alzheimer’s disease. That’s right, too much tilapia could contribute to Alzheimer’s.
Most of the tilapia you see on the market is farmed. That’s because tilapia are very hearty fish, easy for farmers to keep alive on a diet of pig and chicken excrement. Farmers also tend to dose them with heavy amounts of antibiotics. This is what can go into your body when you eat tilapia.
Farmed tilapia is often genetically modified to help the fish grow faster. It should come as no surprise then, that tilapia carry 10 times the carcinogens that other fishes carry. One of the chemicals farmers use of the fish (dioxin) has been linked to the progression of cancer.
Keep all of this in mind the next time you are shopping for fish. Chemicals like dioxin, which are often found in farmed tilapia, can take up to 10 years to be flushed from the human body. Maybe next time, buy the salmon or make sure your fish isn’t farmed at all.
Who knew that the dangerous effects of eating farmed tilapia were so serious? It really makes you think!
